Many Sock Sizes

We’re so happy to offer our famous Matching Socks Sets in multiple sizes now! We always thought most women’s sock patterns used a whole 100g skein of yarn (about 400 yards), but as more people began knitting the socks sets, we noticed that often a color was missing from the finished project. Of course, using a toe-up sock pattern helps with that because you can just bind off whenever you’re done, but still, people seemed to be getting awfully tall socks.

Some of us have un-dainty feet, and a whole sock set was definitely needed to make a nice mid-calf sock. But some of us have normal-sized women’s feet, and some can even wear kids’ shoe sizes. So we put our heads together and came up with a solution. We now offer all of our Gradient and Gradient Stripes Matching Sock sets in three sizes.

Small socks set – approximately 200 yds/set. Perfect for wristwarmers, children’s socks/mittens or women’s anklets. This set of Hunter Hammersen’s A Lady is Known wristers were made with a small sock set.

hunter_mitts

Medium socks set – approximately 300 yds/set. For women’s mid-calf socks sizes 5-10, women’s mittens, Men’s size 6-8 or kids’ knee socks. The Medium is now our go-to sock size for women. If you’re a Size 7 like Tashi, you’ll get perfect mid-calf socks from these two matching cakes. All of the colors are dyed so that the gradient is perfectly proportioned and you own’t miss any colors!

20160518_140200_compact

Because the Medium sets are less expensive than the Large, that basically means we’ve lowered our prices on women’s socks!

Below you can see the difference between the two. These were knit with the same size foot, approximately a women’s size seven. Use the Medium for a perfect women’s mid-calf sock fit. If you’re a women’s size 10 or larger, the Large is the right choice for you. If you want a taller sock and you have smaller feet, use the Large for knee highs.

20160518_140316_grande

Large socks set – approximately 400 yds/set. Women’s size 11-13, Men’s size 9-11, men’s mittens or women’s knee socks. This is me (a women’s Size 10) wearing the Large sock set. There’s still plenty of length there even with a longer foot. Note that the socks in the photo above have a folded-over hem, so are actually an inch or so taller than shown if you knit them with a ribbed cuff, like in the photo below.

IMG_6078_better_grande

You can now choose the Small, Medium or Large sizes for every one of our Dyed-to-Order colors! Just find the color you’d like and choose the sock sets from the Size of Item drop-down menu. Here’s the As You Wish Medium sock set, for example.

We know it can seem counter-intuitive to look for socks in the listings for regular Panoramic Gradients, so we created special Collections on the webpage with the Gradient Matching Socks Sets (long stripes) and Gradient Stripes Sock sets (short stripes).  Both of those kinds of sock sets are dyed to match down to the stitch and are dyed in continuous gradients, so you just cast one and knit, no need to change balls or weave in pesky ends.

You lovely knitters asked us for more sizes, and you got it!!!!!

Happy knitting,

Jaala

Spring Fling Fun!

IMG_6514

Thanks to everyone who came to the Spring Fling party and Saturday celebration. We had a blast!

IMG_6479

This fun group didn’t drink the Kool-Aid, but their yarn did, in my home-safe dyeing class! We had such a good time, and they all created such fresh spring colors.

IMG_6527

Just like when we have friends coming over for a dinner party, hosting a Studio party gives us a reason to spruce everything up and put up some fun decorations. We played up the Tea Party for the new Alice in Wonderland yarns.

IMG_6506

Shari drew up a friendly welcome sign, and we brought out the special Spring Fling colorway. We had a few left, so we’re leaving them up in the store just a couple days longer…

IMG_6478Ann showed us her masterful top using a Still Flying gradient  undyed yarn and a very cool slipstitch pattern. Beautifully knitted!

Saturday, the fun continued as John Loeffelholz led a group of intrepid knitters thorough the intricate process of knitting with sock machines. They don’t make these babies anymore, so you have to learn the ins and outs of these antique machines…

IMG_6496

Sorry this wasn’t the best photo, but the people in the Sock Machine class were totally absorbed the whole time, and learned a ton about coaxing their metal friends to perform. John is one of the nation’s experts on using sock machines, so we’re very lucky to have him in the area. Thanks, John!

IMG_6488

How cool is this thing?!?!?

IMG_6563

And they even made a sock at the end! Pat has a big smile for a job well done.

IMG_6565

The party continued in the store on Saturday, with lots of visitors out and about enjoying the gorgeous weather. This lovely young knitter drove over from Milwaukee to check out the yarns in person and show off her mad knitting skills. This was one of three pairs she’s working on! She loves that you just cast on and knit the Gradient Stripes and they do all the striping for you. As a new sock knitter, she said it gave her confidence.

IMG_6464

It was an event to remember, and we’re definitely doing it again next year. Happy spring everyone and thanks to everyone who came to see us!

Happy knitting,

Jaala

WIP Wednesday

Hi, Knitters,

This week, Katie and I wanted to make some quick-knit gifts, so we each laid claim to some 50g cakes of worsted for gifty satisfaction.

IMG_5207[1]

I’m working on a Barley hat in Ringmaster Worsted for my niece. She’ll look adorable in this rainbow! I’m a big fan of Tin Can Knits; I love their simple patterns. This hat was cast on yesterday and should be finished by tomorrow.20151209_100838

Katie took her 50g cakes in a different direction; she’s designing her own mitten pattern! She’s using our new manly color, Mithrandir, to make some teen-sized mittens. The pattern will give you options for teen and adult sizes too!

Amy’s go-to gift knitting is Cat Bordhi’s Moebius Cowl pattern.

What gifty goodies are you knitting? We’d love to know..

Happy knitting,

Jaala

Buffalo Wool and Indie Yarn Carnival

Hi, Knitters,

Good times; it’s finally fall! After a very warm start, we had a nice, chilly weekend here in Wisconsin, and it looked like everyone at Rhinebeck was wearing their sweaters! The Sheep and Wool Festival looked like a blast; I hope we’ll be there one of these years soon.

IMG_20151007_092035

Speaking of Rhinebeck, we collaborated with the Buffalo Wool Company on an exclusive collection of Knitcircus gradients and Gradient Stripes on their gorgeous Tracks yarn.

IMG_20151007_092101

The bad news is, the shipping went awry, and the yarns didn’t make it to Rhinebeck in time for the festival. The good news is, it’s available to everyone right now on their website!

You can choose 100g gradients, nice big 150g gradients or Gradient stripes Socks sets!

The Buffalo Wool company is a family-owned-and-operated company who have been wonderful mentors to us and gave us a boost with our Kickstarter! We are proud to work with them and hope you’ll support and thank them for us by checking out the yarn!

Yarn Carnival

Another collaboration we’re really excited about is the Indie Yarn Carnival organized by Erin Lane Bags maker Lindsey Martin!

Instagram Idie

This wonderful yarn club will feature a different exclusive yarn colorway and coordinating Erin Lane bag with each shipment. We’re thrilled to be in the company of Miss Babs, Mrs. Crosby Plays, Lydia Yarn, Must Stash and our friends at the Buffalo Wool Co. This club gives you a chance to sample yarns from all of these delightful companies. We’re tempted to purchase a membership ourselves!

Take care and happy knitting,

Design Inspiration Revealed: Wendy D. Johnson’s Maple Leaves Gradient Cowl

Designer Wendy D. Johnson is a multitalented sock-knitting guru, the author of Wendy Knits Lace, Socks from the Toe Up, Toe Up Socks for Every Body and Wendy Knits.

Fall patternsShe designed the amazing Maple Leaves Gradient Cowl for our Fall Collection, which graced the cover!

1)      How did you choose the kind of project you designed?

Lately I have been all about colorwork cowls. Being a woman of “a certain age” a stranded colorwork sweater is just too warm for me to even consider wearing, but I love knitting stranded colorwork. Cowls are the perfect solution, because they are incredibly handy and versatile in the winter. I like them better than a scarf for outdoor wear because they stay put better, and they are easily popped on indoors if the room is a little chilly.

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-92

2)      What was the biggest challenge of designing this project?

My biggest challenge was charting the large leaf motif so that it actually looked like a maple leaf!

3)      What was your favorite part of the process?

I love, love, love knitting colorwork with a gradient and a semi-solid because it makes the finished piece look far more complex than it really is. Watching the pattern emerge as I knit is always my favorite part of knitting colorwork, and it is why I can knit it so quickly: I’m so eager to see the design come to life that I knit faster!

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-102

4)      Your favorite thing about the finished piece?

I love how perfectly suited the yarn is to the design. The finished cowl has an almost velvet look to it because of the depth of color in the yarn.

SampleExcelChart

Here’s a snippet of one of the charts that reveals my dark secret: I chart all my colorwork designs using an Excel spreadsheet and a dingbat font! I never sketch with pencil and paper first, I always start with a blank spreadsheet!

Design Inspiration Revealed: Susanna IC’s Vernice Shawl

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-115 (1)Susanna IC has built her reputation on beautifully-designed shawls, and has had patterns published in many leading knitting magazines, including Twist Collective and Wool People. She designed the stunning Vernice Shawl for our Fall Collection: in the first of a series, she shares her inspiration and design process for us in a mini-interview.

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-134

  1. How did you choose the kind of project you designed?

I wanted to create a smaller, one skein shawl with some fun textures throughout; something that would be quick to knit but still interesting to work on, a perfect gift project. Of course, this being a Knitcircus project, the design also had to play well with beautiful gradient yarns.

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-112

  1. What was the biggest challenge of designing this project?

The inspiration for Vernice came from the brilliant colors of the skein, which reminded me of the changing seasons, and the design progressed easily from there. I wanted to work with interestingly textured lace stitches that would reflect the colors and textures of autumn foliage. The biggest challenge came while trying to decide which color to start with.

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-108

  1. What was your favorite part of the process?

While the more difficult decision had to do with which color to work with first, the red or the blue, the color progression was also my favorite part of the design process. In the end, I decided to start with the blues to reflect the color of clear sunny sky and to finish with the reds that look much like autumn leaves.

KnitCircus_July2015_ConnieWardPhotography-125

  1. Your favorite thing about the finished piece?

I am very happy with the way the textured stitches interact with each other, creating interesting shapes throughout the lace border. I also like how versatile the size of this crescent is: it can be worn around the shoulders as a traditional shawl, yet at the same time the elongated shape makes it possible to wear open like a long scarf.

Ready for Fall Knitting!

Hi, Knitters,

My knitting mojo is back. It’s finally September!!! That means it’s real knitting season, even if it’s 90 degrees outside right now.

Monet
Monet

Of course, we’re all really excited about the new Impressionist Yarns, which is a new technique we’ve been developing this summer to unveil this fall! One of my Assistant Dyers, Erin, told me about a dyeing technique she had tried on fabric; we tried it on yarn, then ended up using a completely different approach to get a similar effect. The final product is a gradient with pops of exciting colors throughout. It’s exciting to knit because you never know what color the next stitch will be!

So I grabbed one of our first prototypes and started knitting up a scarf; I thought that Seed Stitch would be a fun way to make a reversible fabric with the Impressionist yarn.

Renoir Scarf
Renoir Scarf

This became the Renoir Scarf we released along with the new colors last week. It’s an easy free, reversible pattern to make the most of this or any of your favorite DK-weight yarn. This one that I kntted was in the shop for about two days, then my 92-year-old grandma came for a visit. She admired the scarf, so I gave it to her! My grandma loves color, so I knew it would be a perfect fit.

Here’s the Renoir Scarf modeled by our other Assistant Dyer, Emily! Both of our Assistant Dyers are in the Textile Design program at the UW and plan to complete their studies at the Fashion Institute of Design in New York. We’re very proud of them; watch out, fashion industry!

Cassatt
Cassatt

Each of the Impressionist yarns is unique, but they all follow a general gradient pattern. This soft colorway was named for one of my favorite Impressionists, Mary Cassatt. Her paintings of intimate moments between mothers and daughters were pretty groundbreaking at the time.

IMG_4078[1]

I knew we had a kind of quiet, recover-from-the-first-week-of-school weekend planned, so I took a Gauguin colorway to make another scarf. I’ve never been so excited about Seed Stitch! I feel like I could keep on knitting these scarves until the kids head off to college!IMG_4080[1]

Progress so far….

As it turned out, Lil Buddy has been down with a fever all weekend and I spilled hot coffee on my leg, creating a pretty exciting swollen, red knee, so I’ve gotten a little more down time to knit than we anticipated. He seems to have more energy today, so that’s a relief. Moral of the story: always have your knitting ready!

Hope you’re all having a good weekend and staying cool,

Jaala

Keys to the Castle! And Speckle Yarn and Studio Events

Hi, Knitters,

It’s a whirlwind of activity here as we’ve been sending out Trunk Shows for June (Yarnology, Strings Attached and the Yarnover Truck, whooo!), preparing for TNNA (luckily, I’m just attending, not vending), working on our Kickstarter campaign (still time to get in on the exclusive rewards if you haven’t yet!), getting ready to release a new collection this Friday (yay!) AND packing up for the big move June 1st. And all without our beloved Amy D, who’s leading a group of knitters around Ireland as we speak. 🙂

STUDIO NEWSIMG_2897[2]

Maybe not the prettiest photo, but the prettiest things to me! These are the official Keys to the Studio, so we can come and go at will. Our landlord, Tom, is determined to get everything done so we can move in on time. This is no easy task! He’s in the middle of having the ventilation system installed, tiling and plumbing the bathroom, finished putting in extra electrical for our stoves and is about to knock out a wall!

Grand Canyon Speckle
Grand Canyon Speckle

And here’s the Exclusive Grand Canyon Speckle colorway for our wonderful backers! Getting the pale color to show up was a challenge, but I”m very happy with the way it turned out and hope you’ll love it, too.

paint chips of the world, unite
paint chips of the world, unite

Today, we have the fun job of picking out colors for the new spaces…no bashful grays here!

We have a new page on our website for Studio Events! Please check it out for classes, events and general good times.

Finally, I’m very excited to announce one of those Events; the Knitcircus Studio Open House! We’ll celebrate having our doors open and our new digs on Saturday, June 27th, from 12-4:00 pm. If you’re local to Madison, Wisconsin, please join us for gourmet treats, our fresh new store and a special sale event!

Take care , knitters,

Jaala
